Milanowski Wins Big in ABC ‘Pure Excitement 25’ Veterans Kuklinski, Dunbar add to impressive feature win totals by Nick Gima Ashland, WI, August 21 -- Ashland’s Paul Milanowski led from the first turn and paced all 25 laps on his way to an $875 paycheck in winning the seventh annual “Pure Excitement 25” pure stock special presented by the Ashland-Bayfield County Sportsman’s Club at the ABC Raceway on Saturday night.
Milanowski quickly overtook polesitter Steve Udeen and outran Dustin Follett out of the second turn for the early lead of the entry-level division’s 25-lap feature, while Jim Eliason followed the lead pair to third. Eliason then drew alongside Follett to challenge for second on lap 3, a tour before a grinding three-car crash on the back straightaway brought the quick early pace to a halt. The field again clicked off a series of green-flag laps, allowing Milanowski to pull to a seven car-length lead on the fierce battle between Follett and Eliason. On lap 8, however, fifth-place Matt Hammitt got loose with a flat tire and Mark Korte drove over Hammitt’s car’s right side, causing several racers to scurry to avoid a big wreck. Not long after the restart Follett’s car began to smoke badly, and when the caution lights came on for Esten Nelson’s stray tire on the track on lap 12, Follett’s car dropped a puddle of oil on the front straight, ending his great run with a push to the pits. At halfway Ken Tody, Jr, and Chad Carlson became factors, each getting by Udeen for third and fourth. On the next go-around Glenn Dammer moved by Udeen and into the top five, just before Jeff Engelmeier’s flat tire stopped the action again. Eliason, Tody, Carlson and Dammer swapped positions constantly as the race ran off uninterrupted over the final 12 laps, but Milanowski sped away from this skirmish by ten lengths to his third feature win this season. Dammer slipped by Tody while taking the white flag, but Tody retook the spot on the back straight and held on for second, while Carlson and Eliason completed a close-knit top five. Carlson, who won the semi-feature in order to make the main event and started 21st, took advantage of Al Rapp’s DNF in earlier heat race action to turn a 27-point deficit coming into the night’s action into a four-point advantage heading into the season finale next Saturday. |

Robby Bunkelman of Abbotsford, who has a handful of feature wins at other tracks around the region this summer, used his first WISSOTA modified win of the year in Ashland to pull to within two points of Jeff Spacek in that division’s standings. Kent Baxter worked his way around polesitter Steve Stuart to take the early lead in the 20-lapper, but his car pushed through turn 4 too hard, sliding to a near-stop and collecting Stuart’s car and others for an early caution. Stuart held the lead through the next four laps, but Bunkelman, who started on the third row, split the gap between Al Uotinen and Scott Hudack to take second and then drove down below Stuart in a pass for the lead to start lap 5. After a restart for Kent Baxter’s second spin, and another for the stopped cars of Rick Rivord and Bill Byholm a moment later, Bunkelman tried to build a cushion between himself and the battles behind him. Steve Lavasseur came up from sixth to challenge Uotinen for second on lap 7, just before Mark Baxter’s stalled ride slowed the pace again. Then points leader Jeff Spacek began an impressive charge, taking fourth spot on lap 8 and then surprising both Lavasseur and Uotinen with a three-wide inside pass for second just before the cars of Rivord and Kent Baxter became entangled and ground to a stop on lap 12. After Ross Lightner’s spin, the remaining eight laps clicked off non-stop, with Bunkelman building a two-second lead before Spacek closed to within a second-and-a-half at the final checkers. Uotinen edged Lavasseur for third at the stripe, and Scott Hudack completed the top five. |

Greg Kuklinski of Ironwood, MI, added to his track-record list of feature wins by posting number 89 on Saturday, cruising to a margin of victory of over two seconds in the 20-lap WISSOTA super stock A-main. Pole starter Cory Casari worked hard to stay in front of the former track and Red Clay Classic champ, leading a three-car dogfight for the lead that also included Kevin Eder in the early going before a three-car wreck on lap 2 brought the festivities to a halt. On the restart Kuklinski swept around Eder for second, and a lap later used a similar move to take the lead from Casari. After the race was stopped for debris on the next circuit, the race’s final 17 laps ran without delay, allowing Kuklinski to jet away to nearly a straightaway lead. The battle for second, however, was far from over, as Eder, Casari and Brian Mikkonen crossed under the flagstand to complete lap 6 literally simultaneously. Eventually Eder would gain control of the spot, but at the race’s midpoint Scott Lawrence took over third and within two laps pulled alongside Eder. The two swapped the runner-up spot over the next few laps before Lawrence claimed it for good with four tours to go, but by that time Kuklinski was long gone. Lawrence’s second-place effort pushed his points lead over third-place finisher Randy Spacek to 32, while Eder followed closely in fourth, and Mikkonen finished a distant fifth. |

A wild and perhaps controversial finish gave veteran Marenisco, MI, racer Duane Dunbar his 20th career win at ABC and first here in the WISSOTA Midwest modifieds. Dunbar, who last won at Ashland in a super stock in August 2007, tussled with youngster Shawn Rivord through the first laps and a couple of early caution flags for the initial lead. The vast majority of the race ran non-stop; after a lap 1 delay for three separate spins, the next 13 laps were under green and action-packed. Right behind Dunbar was a struggle for second between Rivord and a determined Rob Weber, until Weber gained control on lap 4. By lap 7 Dunbar and Weber had drawn away from the balance of the field, and on lap 9 Weber took a shot at the lead with an inside move, pulling exactly even at the start-finish line with Dunbar on lap 10. However, Weber’s bobble in the next turn allowed Dunbar to get away and Rivord to scoot into second, and Dunbar looked uncatchable from there. But as the leader was about to take the white flag, Chris Bretting and Tim Carlson spun together and Rick Przybylski’s car slowed, forcing a green-white-checkered finish. On the final corner, with Dunbar running about a car-width up the track, Rivord tried to dive to the inside in a pass for the lead but instead made contact; Rivord spun in front of the rest of the field, Dunbar’s car slipped up the track, and Weber snuck beneath all of them for an apparent win. Track officials ruled that the caution flag would have been thrown for the incident, but because the race was ending on that lap the line-up was reverted back to the last completed lap, giving Dunbar the win. Weber was awarded second-place money, while George Dalbeck, points leader Mickey Nosser and second-in-points Taylor Leuthner completed the rearranged top five. |

The night’s first feature also provided a significant amount of drama, as young Tyler Hudack of Ashland collected his second feature win of the season and a new driver moved to the top of the points standings. Hudack started outside on the front row and beat Tyler Vernon to the initial lead, but the field was forced to restart when Forrest Schultz’s car stopped before the first lap was complete. During that stoppage points leader Greg Jaeger drove his car into the pit area and did not return, putting his nine-point advantage coming into the race in jeopardy. After Tad Bretting’s spin on the first restart attempt, Hudack held off Scott Ovaska as long as he could before Ovaska’s inside move on lap 5 rewarded him with the lead. Ovaska continued to set the pace after a lap 7 stoppage for Warren Beede’s spin, as Shawn McFadden, Jr, challenged Hudack for second. But not only did Hudack fend off McFadden’s threats, he regrouped to charge after Ovaska again, driving inside to take the lead for good on lap 12. With the white flag in the air McFadden passed Ovaska for second, and Neil Adamczak and Chuck Hawkinson crossed closely behind for fourth and fifth. His effort, combined with the tough break for Jaeger, gives Adamczak the points lead by seven with one night remaining. |
