Como Series Event at Ashland a Washout
by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI, August 7 -- The Como Oil & Propane Modified Series race event at the ABC Raceway on Saturday night succumbed to a persistent light rain.
The AmsOil Dirt Track Series program, to have been presented by the NAPA Auto Parts stores of Ashland and Washburn, would have included the fifth race of the nine-race, five-track regional Series, as well as action in the WISSOTA Midwest modifieds and the track’s own six-cylinders. But the precipitation started just prior to the track’s scheduled hot-lap time, increased in intensity, and then stopped shortly before 6:30.
Track prep crews quickly restarted grading and packing in an attempt to prepare the track for action, and within an hour the call was made to bring cars out to help with the final few minutes of track-packing. But as that request was made at 7:30 the skies opened up again, and this time the rainfall was too much to overcome.
The Como Mod Series now moves on to the Proctor (MN) Speedway on Thursday, September 2, as part of the annual Silver 1000 invitational. After subsequent stops in Hibbing and Superior, the Series returns to Ashland for its final round on Friday and Saturday, October 1-2, as part of the 35th annual Red Clay Classic.
On Saturday, August 14, the ABC Raceway will once again present a full night of exciting stock-car racing action, featuring all five of its regular weekly classes - WISSOTA-sanctioned modifieds, super stocks and Midwest modifieds, plus the track’s own pure stocks and six-cylinders. Rivord Trucking of Superior and Birch Grove Campground of Iron River will team up to present the racing program. Hot laps begin at 6:15 pm, and the first green flag of the night is scheduled to be thrown at 7. Adult tickets are just $10 each, and kids ages 12 and under are welcome for free with a paid adult admission.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. “Race Night” will air Saturday on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990.
