ABC Bonus Winnings to Bellefeuille, Lawrence, Dalbeck, Coddington, Rapp by Nick Gima
Ashland, WI, August 14 -- Thanks to generous enhancements to the overall purse by program sponsors Rivord Trucking, Birch Grove Campground and the NAPA Auto Parts stores of Ashland & Washburn, drivers at the ABC Raceway were treated to some healthy paychecks after Saturday night’s AmsOil Dirt Track Series action. The approximately $4,500 added to the purse attracted 104 cars into the pits, and the drivers made happiest by the financial boost were feature winners Jody Bellefeuille, Scott Lawrence, George Dalbeck, Dale Coddington and Al Rapp.
Bellefeuille, of Duluth, MN, was lined up alongside polesitter Pat Hoffman for the start of the 20-lap WISSOTA modified A-feature, but Hoffman’s spin in front of the field in the first turn of the race collected several cars and sent him to the pits with a flat tire and other damage. Bill Byholm then lined up on the pole for the restart and raced side-by-side with Bellefeuille for several laps before Bellefeuille established himself as the pacesetter four laps in. The laps clicked off without any further delay, as Bellefeuille ran a smooth mid-groove line the rest of the run and cruised home to his fourth career ABC Raceway win, worth $1,000. A second-and-a-half back was Byholm, while second-in-points Robby Bunkelman won a race-long battle with points leader Jeff Spacek for third. Steve Lavasseur also cleared Spacek for fourth in the race’s late stages.

In the WISSOTA super stock 20-lap headliner, Lawrence quickly shot his way to third from his eighth-place starting spot over the first six laps, filing in just behind early race leader Greg Kuklinski and Mike Bellefeuille. The race was slowed at that point for a Roy Pumala spin, after which both Lawrence and Bellefeuille swept around Kuklinski for the top two spots on the restart. Lawrence slipped inside on Bellefeuille on lap 8 to take the lead, but Bellefeuille returned the favor with an outside pass at the race’s mid-point. One lap later Lawrence again edged ahead, and he would stay there after Justin Iverson’s spin brought the race to a halt with five circuits remaining. Bellefeuille tried working around Lawrence several times over the final laps, but the points leader and defending champ from Superior held on for his fifth win here this summer. Bellefeuille also fended off challenges from Randy Spacek as the lead three came under the checkered flag in close formation, with Ken Truscott not far behind. Andy Grymala made a strong late run for fifth-place money.

The WISSOTA Midwest modified feature was extended to 20 laps and paid $1,000 to the winner on this night, so the event - promoted as “Mid-Mod Madness” - sort of lived up to its name. But Dalbeck, of Wakefield, MI, kept the vast majority of the madness far behind him. Dalbeck won an early battle with second-in-points Taylor Leuthner to take a lead that he would not relinquish, even though the event was slowed by seven caution flags. The first of those came on lap 3, when Shawn Rivord and Cody Carlson spun, and immediately after the restart Rick Przybylski made a bonzai move past Leuthner and Dan Kingsley to go from fifth to second, only to lose the spot as Kingsley dove back to the inside in the next turn. Przybylski, Kingsley, Leuthner and several other front-runners were collected in a grinding crash the next time around, and a couple of laps after that restart contact between visiting Cory Crapser, Carlson and Byholm slowed the pace again. Points leader Mickey Nosser made a nice pass by Ryan Adamczak and Kinglsey to take third on the restart, but it was negated by another multi-car incident. Kinglsey went around Leuthner into second on the next green-flag attempt, and after Nosser followed into third he worked his way around Kingsley to stay before Rob Weber’s flat tire stopped the action again. Despite all of this Dalbeck quickly built up a two-second lead on Nosser before the lap 12 caution for Jesse Ogston’s spin, immediately followed by a Jimmy Latvala loop on lap 13. After one final caution flag the race reached its 30-minute time limt, and Dalbeck had his second feature win of 2010 in Ashland. Nosser, Adamczak, Leuthner and Ogston completed the top five.

The first feature to hit the track was the 15-lapper for the six-cylinders, and the race was Shawn McFadden, Jr’s to lose. He made a strong run past rookie Tad Bretting for the initial lead and, after holding off Bretting’s persistent threat to take back the lead on lap 3, McFadden looked to be too fast to catch. Coddington was running third until lap 4, when he worked outside on Bretting for the runner-up spot. The race’s complexion changed dramatically on lap 7, when the caution flag was waived after Bretting tagged the turn 3 guard rail while trying to hold on to third. During the delay McFadden drove his car into the pit area and would not return, giving up the lead to Coddington. The defending division champ from Hayward graciously accepted the stroke of good fortune and ran away from there to his third win here this summer. Pat Beeksma, who restarted fourth after the caution, wrestled second place away from a determined Scott Ovaska during the final four laps, while Chuck Hawkinson finished a close fourth, and 16th-starter Greg Jaeger protected his points lead with a fifth-place effort.

Rapp made his fourth feature win of the season at ABC look a lot easier than it was. After front-row-starter Tim Carbon looped his ride in the first turn of the 15-lap pure stock feature, Chad Carlson’s current run of bad luck continued with a flat tire that knocked the second-in-points driver out of the race. In a race that featured a lot of position scrambling and swapping, Paul Milanowski and Carbon both spun in separate incidents on lap 2 to bring about another yellow flag, and it was on that restart that Rapp assumed the lead. The points leader from Saginaw, MN, sped home from there to the victory, while impressive runs by visitors Steve Udeen and Andy Udeen earned second- and third-place paychecks. Ken Tody, Jr, and Matt Hammitt came home a close fourth and fifth, respectively.

| Prior to the start of the program, twenty-two of the cars that Rivord Trucking supports were gathered together in Victory Lane to pay tribute to their sponsor, including two racing go-karts and the WISSOTA late model of veteran campaigner Tim McMann. Mike Rivord, his son Rick and grandson Shawn, each of whom currently races, and Mike’s father were brought together for a four-generation group photo in front of an appreciative crowd. |

| Ten bicycles were given away as well on this night, donated by Rivord Trucking, Birch Grove Campground, Shell’s Day Care and Rick Gondick Law Office. The lucky winners were Cole Ambek, Olivia Hyde, Cashton Ofsted, Aubrey Posernich, Brady Lahti, Ally Jokinen, Thor Frydrych, Isabell Schlent, Matt Olson and Abby Popp. |
